Final Draft Suicide

Suicide should never be an option for someone nor should it ever be encouraged no matter what the case may be, it is more of something that we should rather help fight or better understand. Life, it is truly a beautiful thing, for some of us it is something that we cherish and adore so much that the thought of suicide would never be involved in our mind.  For others in this world it is just something that they can not handle or neither want. Their life does not satisfy them. it may not satisfy them for a number of reasons either that they feel horrible for the actions and chapters that they have created in their life or that they feel like they will never be able to succeed in their long aimed goals. The majority of these people have gone through large amounts of time contemplating if suicide would really be the key to help put an end to all of their pain and suffering. The real problem with these types of scenarios is that some people in this world actually believe that suicide may be an overall benefit for both the people thinking of it and for those who are only spending their time looking after the people who make an attempt at it. It is one of the worst types of proposals that has been brought forth to create a better world. Instead of encouraging people to make the wrong decisions we should better help those that need it in these troubling times.
Tauriq Moosa a tutor in ethics at the University of Cape Town, South Africa is the publisher of “Should we help prisoners kill themselves”. In his article Moosa discusses about a man that wants to be put to death rather than to live the rest of his life incarcerated. Although Moosa believes that the man should be denied his proposal for him to be put to death or to commit suicide. He does believe that there should be prisoners that do deserve the right for them to either be killed by the death penalty or either to let them commit suicide for it may only provide a benefit towards the persons needs and the society for not having to spend money on a person that is only wasting space. Moosa describes that the only way that we should aid a person to kill themselves is that when we have a criminal that committed a crime that is so severe or when we have enough evidence that can confirm that it will cost more to take care of the person that needs intensive care then it will be to simply let them take their own life. During times like these Moosa believes that it is when we know for sure that the person actually committed the crime when they are willing to give up their life because they know that they have done something completely wrong. Even with all this being said it still does not provide good enough evidence for us to let someone take their own life. Whether it being someone that is being cooperative and pleading guilty we should not let that be a reason for them to commit suicide. I can agree with how Moosa believes that life in prison is in a way worse than the death penalty but it is still not right that he believes that if the crime is that severe the person should be able to commit suicide or be killed capitally.

While aiding a criminal that is trying to commit suicide may help society save money and time, it does not mean that it will fully give a positive reflection to the community. In turn it actually has a more opposite effect to it. The reasons why it could have a negative effect is that by letting criminals commit suicide you are letting society believe that it is right for someone to commit suicide if they have good enough reason to do so. It is times like these where a person that is thinking about suicide may take it in the wrong way. Suicide can be no more than just an extremely difficult checkpoint in their life where they are stuck on that is truly the best way to resolve their problems.

In the year 2010 alone there was a total of 38,364 deaths that were caused by suicide, leaving it to be ranked the 10th main cause of death in the United States. Although the total number of deaths caused by heart disease was  597,689  in that same year. People must still put into consideration  that the amount of attempts of suicide were 959,100. That is almost double the causes of death by heart disease . No one chooses to have heart problems they either are genetically more prone to getting them or either get them by a lack of diet or exercise. Suicide on the other hand is considered to be more of a choice rather than being something that was already placed into your genetics. It may be true that the majority of people that attempt suicide do not usually go through it, but for the ones that do end up going through with it  leave a much bigger scar in the lives of their loved ones.

In the article “Struggling to understand Suicide” by Ron Rolheiser president of Oblate School of Theology he talks about a friend that he knew that attended a funeral of a man that committed suicide. He mentions that in the funeral  the brother of the man that committed suicide gave his speech about how his brothers death was such a more harder one, than one that is caused by a much more natural cause. But he compared  his brothers suicide to a similarity of a cause of cancer. Although cancer and suicide are different he mentioned that suicide was more like an emotional cancer. Suicide a.k.a “emotional cancer” is similar to cancer because it can be dealt with almost in the same ways. Saying that people could actually be treated to take it away and possibly cure it, they could also be treated for it just so they could live the rest of their remaining life or that they could not be able to do much with it and eventually end up only dying from it because it is something that is either too strong to overcome. Describing that suicide gives a much darker hole to the feeling that comes from the person’s loved ones. The families can no longer think of the person the same way anymore that they are usually more less talked about in conversations in order to not create a more depressing feeling. He closed his speech by saying that no one really knows why he choose to end his life but the only way to  better find out would, be to better understand suicide.
I could not agree more with the description of the mans speech. I as well had a friend of mine commit suicide and my feelings and my reactions were almost the same as the description of that same family from Ron Rolheiser’s article. It’s a feeling that ‘s much more different from someone that passes away by a natural death. Everyone was in shock as to why he would have actually done it . People were aware that he was having relationship problems but this still made people question if there would have been a way to actually stop him from doing it. It is not as simple to just stop a person from hurting themselves. Just because you may stop them from hurting themselves that one time doesn’t mean  you will always be there to protect them. The fact of the matter was that my friend desperately needed help and it could have easily been prevented if his family would have payed more attention to the signs that he was showing to them. None of my other friends had the slightest idea that he had mentioned he would kill himself if his girlfriend left him, but his family did and they only had mentioned it after he had gone through with it. With the help of positive reinforcement by the use of love from family could make the biggest impacts on whether or not someone will commit suicide.
In the journal  “Collective Efficacy, Family Attachment, and Urban Adolescent  Suicide Attempts”written by David Maimon,Christopher R. Browning, and Jean Brooks-Gunn has provided numerous amounts of information stating how efficacy  and family attachment plays a major role in suicide for the youth. As I described earlier that suicide was the tenth main cause of death in the United states overall but while looking at the statistics from the causes of adolescent deaths suicide actually places in third for the leading cause of death for kids in the age group of 14-25. Some of the reasons for such a high suicide rate in this age group is based upon how the family is attached to one another the majority of the time suicide is at a much higher risk for those adolescents that do not have that much family attachment. Generally a typical family that stays close to one another will tend to have a much smaller amount of depression growth than that of a family that is apart and does not communicate. My friend  had fit almost of these types of characteristics ranging from his mother and father being divorced and him rarely having much communication with his family he was also 18 years old  right in between the age group for the causes of teen suicide. Maybe this all could have been prevented by his family showing more support. But it is not as simple as that sometimes showing too much family attachment can actually be more of a downfall to a child rather than a good benefit. All of these scenarios matter in terms of what type of position the person may be in.
Brooke Donatone a psychotherapists from New York City wrote “Why Millennials Can’t Grow Up” for the reason to explain to people that making too many decisions for your children can lead to be a terrible thing. It is also called helicopter parenting where the parent is always hovering around their child in order to always make decisions for them. In the article Donatone describes one of her patients story and how the girl named Amy is too scared to grow up on her own. She is 30 years old now and still does not know what she wants to do in her life and she is completely overwhelmed with the decisions she is faced to pick without the help of her parents. This types of scenarios  can be extremely difficult for people to face alone. The majority of these types of situations will have an ending result of severe cases of depression which may lead to suicide. Although suicide may not seem to be an option for the average person  when they are unable to make a decision it will actually play a major role into a person that is unable to make decisions for themselves. But this is where we are able to help prevent attempts of suicide where we are able to notice a change in the persons personality.  There are many different ways on how depression can be controlled and by being able to control depression it can play one of the main important steps in committing suicide.
Controlling depression has been handled in many types of forms but there is no real exact cure. Some ways people have been controlling their depression is by simply  going out and taking walk, having a nice venting conversation with friends or even just going out and meeting more people rather than being  home and away from society. These are some of the ways people may be able to  help control depression without the help of any type of medicine. When a person is at a point that he or she is unable to control their depression they may need to be prescribed medicine in order for them to not reach an uncontrollable melting point. There have been numerous amounts of antidepressant drugs that have been created in order to help control severe types of depression. Abilify, Adaphin, Zoloft and Prozac are just just a few of  many antidepressants that  are most commonly used for helping control depression for all types of people. A large chunk of these types of antidepressants have been used to help prevent prison inmates commit suicide. People like Tauriq Moosa  believe that it is sometimes more expensive to help treat suicide in jails and prisons for they do not provide a good benefit to our society. It is only then when Moosa believes it is right for  prisoners to be allowed to commit suicide for it will only create a greater good for this world. It may sound like it would be a benefit to people when the average person hears it but in reality that is not all to true.
In “Preventing Suicide In Jails And Prisons”  written by the World Health Organization discuses the negatives that occur when suicide occurs in a prison or jail. Many people may not even think of these small things when a suicide occurs in a prison or jail to some people they think it will only create a benefit but in turn that is actually the opposite in most cases. When a suicide occurs in a prison it can escalate to a huge political scandal that also begins to worsen when it is fueled by the media covering it. One way it creates a negative cause is that it will affect the police officers that help look after the inmates that try to commit suicide. Although they are not being hurt physically it can actually still leave long term emotional scars from seeing the sheer scene of a person that has committed suicide. When suicides like these occur and are displayed by the media it will also cause negative encouragement to those who currently undergo thoughts of suicide it will give them more of a reason to do it. It is said that their is one suicide attempt approximately every three seconds and that their will be one successful attempt every one minute. Although people still may not care if people in jails and prisons commit suicide it does not mean that we should let them go with without  trying to stop them.
When being faced with these situations we should not merely look past them but we should look into how we can help solve them. Everyone has made mistakes in their lives, some more than others but it shouldn't be a reason why we should let some of the worst people commit suicide. Life is such a beautiful thing and should never be wasted sometimes people that make the worst mistakes in life can end up turning everything around and using their flaws to better encourage those who have felt like they once did before.

Rough Draft Depression

Depression is not looked at as a serious illness but many people in America have it and therefore should be studied a lot more because it can lead to serious health issues and suicide. There are people that want to focus more on other health risks in America such as Heart Disease, Cancer, Kidney Renal failure etc. But this does not mean that we should limit less the studies on depression for it can be just as serious and it is destroying the lives of Americans.
One type of way depression is ruining the lives and families of America is because of suicide. In the year 2010 there was a total of 38,364 deaths that were caused by suicide leaving it to be ranked the 10th main cause of death in the United States. Although the the total number of deaths caused by heart disease was  597,689  in that same year. People must still put into consideration  that the amount of attempts of suicide were 959,100. That is almost double of the causes of death by heart disease . No one chooses to have heart problems they either are genetically more prone on getting them or either get them by a lack of diet or exercise. Suicide on the other hand is considered to be more of a choice rather than being something that was already placed into your DNA. It may be true that the majority of people that attempt suicide do not usually go through it, but for the ones that do end up going through with it  leave a much bigger scar into the lives of their loved ones.
From “Struggling To Understand Suicide” by Ron Rolheiser president of Oblate School of Theology he talks about a friend that he knew that attended a funeral of a man that committed suicide. He mentions that in the funeral  the brother of the man that committed suicide gave his speech about how his brothers death was such a much more harder one, than one that is caused by a much more natural cause. The families can no longer think of the person the same way anymore that they are usually more less talked about into conversations in order to not create more depressing feeling. He closed his speech by saying that no one really knows why he choose to end his life but the only way to  better find out ,would be to better understand suicide.
I could not agree more with the description of the mans speech. I aswell had a friend of mine commit suicide and my feelings and my reactions were almost the same as to the description of that same family from Ron Rolheiser’s article. Its a feeling that ‘s much further different from someone that passes away by a natural death. Everyone was in shock as to why he would have actually done it . People were aware that he was having relationship problems but this still made people question if there would have been a way to actually stop him from doing it. It is not as simple to just to stop a person from hurting themselves. Just because you may stop them from hurting themselves that one time doesn’t mean  you will always be there to protect them. The fact of the matter was that my friend desperately needed help. But it wasn’t just medicine that he needed. It would have had to been help far greater than just medicine.
Another way depression is ruining the lives of Americans is that it is beginning to be more commonly found throughout the youth of america.  This plays a very crucial role how the future of this country could be affected by it. A majority of people that suffer from depression are college students. It has been reported that there is up to thirty percent of college students get so depressed that they are not able to function properly. This is a very large chunk of the percentage of students that are enrolled into colleges. By being able to better treat and control depression it will let the college students be more focused and in turn give them a better outcome of  their school.
These most recent years have been extremely hard for Americans especially since the economy has gone down so far. We have been reaching numbers of disemployment very similar to ones that from back of the days of the Great Depression. This  type of situations have only been worsening the amounts of depression. People loosing their jobs and not making enough money for their families has been causing them to get even more depressed. It has been splitting families apart by causing the number of divorces in America to increase.
When divorces occur it ultimately leads to many different types of depression, not only towards one person but possibly to the whole family. From the “Journal of Health and Social Behavior” written  by Ranae J. Evans and Robin W. Simon they conducted studies on how many percentage of people have depression or any other type of mental illness. Their test and studies performed were mostly done to many different age groups and also performed types of races which they believed to show a big difference from which ethnic groups have a higher depression rate than the other. Also in the “Statistics and the nature of Depression” written by G. Dunn, P. C. Sham and D. J. Hand they go through other types of studies that were conducted in the past that show how such a large percentage of people have it. Although the studies that are talked about in this article are very dated they still give almost the same percentage of people with depression. The only way to really solve this issues is to go beyond the studies that we conduct for depression and try to do more research on antidepressants or more natural medicines that will give us less harmful side effects.

There are many different types of medicines that are prescribed to help stop depression. The name of a couple of these medicines are Doxepin, Bupropion, Ariprazole, Citaploram, and Alprazolam otherwise known as Xanax and also to be known  as the most widely used antidepressants. But with all these different types of antidepressants creates another problem. Many people become in desperate need for their antidepressants that they in turn get in a way addicted to the drug because they will feel that they cannot properly function without it. And in worse cases people may actually have an opposite effect on the drug entirely. These type of medications can cause a person to increase their thoughts on suicide, and feel very agitated.  Sometimes it may not be the simple case on to having to just take a pill in order to control your depression.
We as Americans have had a bad habit at always looking at medicine to be the key to cure of all our diseases and illnesses. But when looking at other studies and different methods we can begin to see that depression can also be reduced by doing simple things. Exercising your body can in turn create some of the most similar types of chemicals that you get from medicine it will help reduce your stress and better control your depression. Exercising will also help improve your physical and mental health. For people wanting to do more research on heart disease and other health issues exercising would be a great way to help both people with depression and other deadly related health issues. Also being around people would help lower your depression by not making you feel alone sometimes all a person needs is just a little bit of companionship.
Although many of descriptions that have shown and proved to you help treat depression are ones that someone could almost clearly see it does not mean that we shouldn’t try study and do more research on other types of treatments of depression. Weather it be a form of physical, mental exercise or it being treated by an antidepressant there are numerous ways on how to help stop or treat depression. But it has to be pushed for us Americans to continue studying it more and more for it will always play a devastating and gloomy role in our culture.

Summary

In his article "Struggling to Understand Suicide," Ron Rolheiser president of Oblate School of Theology talks about a man that gave a speech about his brothers death by suicide. He mentioned that suicide is actually a type of an emotional cancer, it is something that sometimes can be cured by doctors, sometimes can be controlled enough for the person to live for the rest of their remaining life or it may be a cancer that can not be stopped and evidently kills the person. He describes how after a person commits suicide it doesn't just take them away from life and their families but it also takes away the loving memories that the family once had about the person. Finding out how to understand how suicide would be the best anybody could do in order to prevent from even more happening.
In my opinion I completely agree with Rolheiser from him mentioning that suicide can be a form of an emotional cancer and how it something so dark and emotional that is always somewhat there just hiding. I agree with him because I have had a friend actually commit suicide and it had literally gave me the same type of feelings to which Rolheiser described.

proposal

Throughout time people have died from a variety of different health issues. This issues have ranged from a variety of things such as heart disease, lung cancer, renal kidney failure or even strokes. Theses type of illnesses and diseases are some of the leading causes of death around the world, but many people forget that depression is also one of the most leading causes of death. This is why I believe even more research should be done in order to stop the causes of depression. This is a type of illness that can not simple be stopped by the production of a type of medicine.

universe summary

In an article by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow named "Why God Did Not Create the Universe" they discuss on how the whole universe was created. Bringing up different laws onto why everything was created and how although everything may seem like it was tailor-made for us humans it does not mean that it was all made up by one creator. They discuss on how the whole universe works only by the laws of physics and those laws can never be broken. Although people believe that we are the only ones that exists in the universe Hawking's talks about it may be true that we might be the only ones in this universe to exists, but it does not mean that this is the only universe. He mentions that there actually could be many more universes and those might have different laws that could be able to create life.
I do agree with alot of what Hawkings states in his article but it simple still makes me question even more on how he can say that there could not be one type of creator that made the universe.

Final Draft 2

There is plenty of skepticism about how mainstream media views Rap and Hip-Hop. This has been an issue since almost the beginning of rap during the 70's. As Rachel E. Sulivan puts it "The criticisms leveled by White politicians, almost all of whom viewed rap as producing potential victimizers". I understand views on hip hop and rap does progressively worsen when you hear that Chief Keef and other rappers like him are some of the biggest names in the game. But what the true flaw is that the political media must stop portraying all rap artist as being all the same and portraying to be evil, and that they should start looking at the other rap artists that truly create a more positive influence in today’s society. Examples of some these artists would be Lupe Fiasco, and Hopsin they create different magnificent pieces of work that in turn makes their fans become more aware of life instead of being young and reckless. Their type of music helps give a more positive view towards Hip-Hop rather than making people view it as a way to brainwash the youth into entering gangs and getting involved with drugs. These rap artist are popular, but they honestly don’t get the credit that the truly deserve instead the media still tries to put them into the same category as being  a bad influence towards the youth, but they don't even try to make an attempt on seeing their true message. If more people started listening to these artists and started focusing their attention on the message maybe their perspectives on rap would actually change and make them realize that there still is rap music out there that will change the world for the better.

Some of the objections I have towards one particular skeptic. Eugene Slaven a Marketing Development Writer for Media Research Center, wrote an article depicting rap as a way to missguide its listeners. Within his article  “The Truth About Rap Music” he states some good points but all in which I believe were just too noticeable. He mentions that this kind of rap is a terrible influence towards poor black kids. That it makes them more vulnerable to get into to these kind of criminal activity because they see crime on a daily basis. The flaw that he makes with this is that he mentions that he listens to more of underground rap than he does of the more popular artist, but he doesn't even give any type of names of the so called underground rappers that he listens too. Like I had mentioned earlier people just tend to view rap as a way to brainwash the youth into causing negative productivity towards the community. So how is it that someone  can be influenced by them if the majority of people have never even heard about them. Slaven said it himself “ I am talking about hardcore rap, underground rap, and rap performed by artists that nine out of ten rap fans have never even heard of.” If you look at the majority of todays hot 100 list of music you'll see that almost 50% of consists of Hip-Hop. This is a big percentage so why is it that he wouldn't just use those type of artists instead of underground rappers that no one knows about.

Yes I can agree with him that some rappers can cause negative messages. But just because the artist portrays himself as a part of a gang or that he uses nothing but profanity in his lyrics doesn’t mean that they are the only ones that can be considered as to being hardcore. My views on being hardcore would be people giving a more aggressive approach with their messages and not caring on what people view them as, and yes also using profanity. Hopsin a fairly famous rap artist can also be considered a hardcore rapper. He may use a lot of profanity throughout his music, but don’t let that be the way you judge him. In most of his music he gives a more positive message to people on to why they shouldn’t do drugs, and how it will only cause them to get caught in the same loop that will never change them. Hopsin had mentioned that YOLO is just a reason for someone to do something stupid.

One song in particular that he gives a message about people should stop following the ways that other rappers guide them in is called  “ILL Mind of Hopsin 5”. At the end of the song he mentions “I can guide you if you feel blind I just need you to be willing to travel through my ill mind”. When he says that he tries to make his audience realize that he is there for them to save them although they might be lost. This is truly is a great message but it honestly can not be as widely heard, and understood if people only view it as just vulgar language. This is also can relate to how Rachel E. Sullivan explained how many politicians viewed rap as bad message. She had stated that " President George H. W. Bush also voiced his antirap sentiments when he critized Ice-T and Body Count's song "Cop Killer" But Ironically, neither politician had heard these albums, in fact Bush failed to realize that Body Count was in fact a heavy metal group".

Continuing with the Eugene Slaven's article I can still see how some people may agree with him saying that he used very good people that also think like him. But Slaven using Bill O’Reilly as a good example of someone whom also believes rap is a bad influence for black youths makes his argument weaker. The reason for this is that O’Reilly himself is a person that is very biased and doesn’t fully want to hear the true meaning of something. An example of O’Reilly doing this can be found right here. When O’Reilly told Lupe Fiasco that he is portraying the president as being a terrorist, he would not let Lupe further explains what the true meaning of the song was.

Lupe Fiasco is a another good example on how rap music should be viewed at as intellectual. From "I'm Afraid Chicago is Dying" written by Greg Kot a music critic from the Chicago Tribune he describes Lupe being more viewed as a teacher. Explaining how Lupe creates his music to raise awareness to the things that are happening all around the world. This type of music gives a more positive view towards rap because it also tries to make people steer away from heavy drugs or drinking. Lupe can be viewed as a way to make a more positive effect to its listeners. He may have came across Bill O’Reilly as more of a person that is misguiding children into to trouble but that is not the actual case. When Lupe mentioned that when we were also classified as being terrorists he did not intern make it seem that we are evil in the United States he was more of as trying to say that we shouldn’t contribute on doing the same thing as what other people did to us on 9/11. His real message was to be more at peace than to cause even more destruction than what other people did to us.

His most recent album covered a giant assortment of different topics ranging from politics, drugs, and even just some simple catchy songs that were about having fun just to show his audience that you can still have fun while talking about more important matters in the world.
Not only does he go about giving great music in the album but he even describes that on the album cover itself he was always trying to show a message on using the word losers and making it actually the opposite of what it means. His type of style in the rap industry has influenced his audience in powerful ways. While I watched this video it really did show me how his words impact his fans.

If interviews like these were done more frequently on rappers rather than ones given by people like Bill O'Reilly they would give a more positive view on how rap can be a positive influence on the youth of this nation. Next time while you listen to the media about a rap artist's do not quickly judge as being a rebel to our society. Take time to listen to their music and understand their message don't just judge the book by its cover. If you have time to listen to how the media views rap then you surely have time to listen to the music. Good inspiring rap music is out there, the artists may not be the biggest names in the music industry but they are out there. These type of artists should be the ones to get more recognition for their work. But the only thing is like how Hopsin had said “I can guide you if you feel blind you just have to be willing to travel through my ill mind”.

Thesis video

This video shows a perfect example on how Lupe Fiasco uses his music to give out powerful messages to his audience. Even explaining that his album cover was a way to show a nice influential message to people.

Thesis 2

Rap music is a great way for people to express their true feelings and also show and important message. I believe I will do really good on this paper because rap to me is more than just music. Rap itself can be used to talk about many different subjects not just one. I believe it would be a good subject to use for a paper because there are many people that can relate to the messages that are brought up through rap. I am also confident in this paper because there are numerous of rap artist that all have their own personal styles of rap that can speak to many different varieties of people.

I say 9-30-13

One of my favorite rap artists today is Lupe Fiasco, because I believe in his music he really does try to give out very important messages to whoever listens to his music. In Lupe's recent song called "Words I Never Said" he raps about the war on terror, and also about the United states government. In the song he talks about how the war on terror is just nonsense. He mentions how a lot of things get covered up for an example when he says that "Gaza Strip was being bombed Obama didn't say Shit". He brings this up as an example because he thinks we try to fight a war on terror but then again we go out and make terror by contributing to it. By doing the same thing to other parts of the world but the government doesn't try to make it the biggest deal, and that they try to not mention as much. In the music video he shows people walking around with their mouths covered showing how they aren't able to speak their own mind. This makes you feel that the people of the United States are basically prisoners of are own country.
Although I am a big fan of Lupe Fiasco I have to say that I agree and also disagree with the message he trys to send out through the music video. The music video to me I believe was a very powerful message that was very effective. By covering up people's mouths it gave me a message that people aren't really able to say what they want to say, and that are limited to their own opinions. I also like how in the video while Lupe begins to sing a storm of police comes in to pull him away. He puts this in the video to show that the government does not want you saying to much. The thing that I dont agree with Lupe is that when he says Obama didnt say anything about Gaza Strip being bombed. I personally believe that did mention alot about the Gaza strip and what was going on. Its not like the president was trying to keep as a giant secret.

I personally use popular culture on a daily basis, and I sometimes get sucked into so much that I will tend to get angry with it because I believe I am wasting my time.  I believe hearing or seeing important news on facebook, or my email is very important to me because it helps me know what is going on around the world. The reason why I like hearing about what is going on is that I believe it can help me later on from being aware from the problems that occur.
Popular culture can be both a negative and positive thing. Sometimes it is very positive because it can let people be aware of things a lot quicker than ever before. With people finding out about problems at a fast rate they will be able to prepare for an event and possibly avoid the situations. The only problem with popular culture these days is that it comes up too many topics that are just not that important. One big example would be the media constantly bringing up twerking.

Final Draft 1

College isn't for everyone especially for those who are forced into it. Although it may be a helpful tool for people, it can sometimes lead them to make some of the most intricate decisions in their lives. This may be a different story for those people who do know what their aiming for in life and actually need a degree to further succeed in their career. If you were a student today or if you are one already wouldn't you agree with some of these points. It seems like whenever you hear about students these days you usually here the discussions of if their degrees are really worth it, or that their simply going to college because they were told to either by their family or schools.
Yes there are people who already know what they want and may have a more concrete plan on how to take on college. But what about all of the other people that don't know what they want to be yet. Its not right for them to be getting constantly fed information on why they need to go to college from other people, and how they won't succeed if they don't go. Pushing someone into something their not interested only makes the scenario even worse. Who are you to tell someone that they wont succeed in life without a college degree. The decision should ultimately be left for the student not the parent or school board. I know for a fact that there are many of students who are going to college only for that reason.
Someone who has personally experienced some of these types of standpoints is my girlfriend. Many of the problems that she has faced within her higher education have been just that of what I have described from the beginning. She didn't even want to go to college but had to because her parents forced her too. Some reasons why she didn't want to go was simply that she wasn't in a good financial standpoint at the time, and that she still simply didn't know what she wanted to major in. She had previously gone to two different community colleges before she had gone to Kendall college in downtown Chicago for her bachelors in Hospitality Management.
The first community college that she attended was College of DuPage. Her family wanted her to go to COD because it was cheaper, and her older siblings had also graduated with an associates degree from that school. This had brought down more pressure towards her because she was living under the shadow of her siblings, not only did it make her more stressed out, but it had made her less motivated to go to college. While attending COD she had failed a couple classes this lead her to discontinue of being a full time student at that school. What made the situation even worse was that she had spent the majority of her savings into the school. After a year of COD she decided to look for other schools.
She quickly registered to Harper community college where she was looking into the culinary program which had caught her interest. Feeling more confident in herself, she began to believe that the culinary field was the path she wanted to proceed in. While attending Harper for one semester she continued to pursue to have a career goal. Which made her look into Kendall College in downtown Chicago which specializes in Culinary and Hospitality management. Quickly after applying she was accepted. The only thing left that she had questioning was on how she was going to be able to pay for the school.
After her acceptance she had met with a financial aid advisor to discuss about her payment options.
The tuition of the school was obviously too expensive to pay out of pocket. Although her parents were still telling her that she had to go back to college quickly because they did not want her to get left behind. This was the reason why she decided to take out student and parent plus loans. By the first quarter of Kendall she realized that from her past work experience that she was more comfortable in the front of the house operations. Rather than working in the back as a chef. This lead her to change her major into hospitality management.
Continuing with Kendall she began to go through internships from working in management in the sky boxes at Soldier-field, United Center, and U.S Cellular field. All of these different types of internships made her see that there were many job opportunities in her field, but she began noticing that many of her fellow coworkers were ones that did not even go to college. This worried her through the middle of her Kendall college life. Now nearing the end of her college she is starting to have second thoughts on if her major that she pursued in was really worth the grueling price of a $90,000 dollar college education. When someone without that kind of degree could also get a similar job in which she is going for, although they most likely wouldn't be in a higher position unlike her unless they worked there for numerous amounts of years. Making matters worse was that her parents were also questioning her on why she had picked this type of career. All of these types of questions could have just been answered if her parents wouldn't have forced her into having to make quick decisions in her college life. Although some people don't tend to think that these are some reasons why kids get sucked into student debt so bad
In this article called a "Lifetime of student debt? Not Likely" written by Robin Wilson. He persuades his audience by describing how many of today's college students don't end up with so much debt after school. Providing examples on how many of the students that do have debt are typically around the twenty thousand dollar range which is not overall that bad comparing to the fact that he mentions that the price of a 2009 Ford Escape is just about that. Progressing in his topic he goes on the discussion about how kids that do end up with such monstrous debts and how that it is ultimately their own decision to pay that much for their kind of education depending on what they want to do. Saying that it is a good thing to pay that much for an education that will give you a good paying job but not good if it will be going towards a career that will not be that financially efficient.
I do agree with Williams at certain points towards his argument like for the fact that people should spend a lot of money on their education only if their career will be a good paying one. But I disagree when he mentions that it is a student's fault on their own decision too pay so much for an education that wont be all that financial great. Like my girlfriend as an example, she was forced to go to college to figure out what she wanted to be, this was not all of her decisions. It all had added up from the very beginning of her college life on first not really wanting to go. If she would have known what she wanted to do before just being forced into college her debt would have not snow balled into such a significant figure. By changing her career it made her loose money and also made her debt get higher because now she would have to start all over again. Her parents just forced her to keep going and to keep trying because they thought it would only make her stronger in the long run of her life.
When it comes down to the topic on pushing kids to go to college straight out of high school. I Believe Patricia McGuire, President of Trinity Washington University, describes it perfectly on why forcing kids to go to college can have a more negative effect than positive towards students and their thoughts about college. In McGuire's previous work back in 2012 she mentions that the government mandates that students must do two things before they can even graduate. Those two things are that each student would have to at least submit one college application and also that they would have to take the SAT tests. Not only does she state that this shouldn't be necessary but she mentions that if kids were not to do that great on there SAT's then it wouldn't even help them get into the college that they had already applied for. Which would in turn create them to doubt themselves even more for thinking that they are not even intellectually capable to go to college.
My own experience with this is very similar to how McGuire explains it. While in high school I was constantly being told by my counselors and teachers to start applying for colleges when they didn't even know what I wanted to do in my life. Struggling to get good grades and having to deal with the fact that I had done horrible in my ACT. I couldn't help but feel that I wasn't even good enough for a higher education. This slowly made me to start looking even less forward too on actually going to college just by thinking I wouldn't be able to keep up with good grades. The grades that I have gotten throughout my life weren't the only thing that made it harder for me, a lot also had to do with how I was even raised in school. It had always felt like I wasn't able to do what I wanted. Some of these things I honestly believe should be changed on how people should encourage their kids or their students to view their future.
There are many different ways on how people can be raised up to think about their education. The way they are taught from little kids up to their teenage years can make the strongest impact on what would be the best path to take after high school. According to Peter Gray,"More than 2 million children in the United States now base their education at home and in the larger community rather than at school, and an ever-increasing proportion of their families have scrapped set curricular approaches in favor of self-directed learning". How Gray describes his ideas through out the text he shows how he describes people are more willing to learn on their own when given the freedom to study anything they want. Instead of having schools basically focus on one direct path. The way I believe he try's to put it as is that if a person wishes to further educate his or herself it should be completely up to them instead of being forced to do something they don't want to. Although College can give many students a better edge on what their majoring in. It may also not always be necessary for people to take depending on how they already are in that field.
For instance my brother as a mechanic has not needed to go to college in order to learn and have a good career in the automotive industry. As I quote from the words of Mike Rose the writer of "Blue Collar Brilliance" "Although writers and scholars have often looked at the working class, they have generally focused on the values such workers exhibit rather than on the thought their work requires a subtle but pervasive omission". There is much that I like to say about this. He shows how people with higher education look down on people that didn't do the same, and how they don't even look deeply on how it does not only require manual labor to do a job like being a mechanic or waitress. While my brother didn't need a higher education to get through in his career it still did not make him unsuccessful. This just goes to show how school is not necessary for everyone.

Summary 2

In his article "Is College Worth It?" Brandon Busteed agrees that college is worth the money but he also implies that the teaching systems should be changed for students to have a better outcome of it. Stating the fact that the average person with a bachelors degree will earn roughly a million dollars more in their life than some one that only graduated through high school. While mentioning that in todays economy many of these things have been changing, from the fact that tuition has raised up to an additional 15% from the 23% where it was back in 2001, and also that many college grads today are not getting well paid jobs after their schooling. Busteed does go on to say that it is also not all about the money when it comes down for getting the job that is best for you after college. If the person were to get a job that they loved and dreamed about after their higher education it will make them happier and give them a more well being. The well being as he mentions is one of the key parts in a person that makes him or her happy, just by having the job that will make you enjoy yourself every day you walk into it can make a person feel even that much better about themselves. Rather than having a job that you hate going into every day but deal with it just because the pay is good. As the topic goes on it changes into the concern of the college staff from it describing that they should be changing their strategies on how they introduce a way for their students to be focused on a better outcome for their future rather than aiming towards just good paying jobs.
My own belief on this topic is that I think college is worth the money and time only to an extent. If you would be willing to go to school and spend that much money wouldn't you want to know that you would be able to pay it back safely without having to worry about all of your student loans building up. After all Busteed does mention in the article that tuition of the schools have just only been rising.

Revised thesis

College isn't for everyone especially for those who are forced into it. Although it may be a helpful tool for people it can sometimes lead people to make some of the most intricate decisions in their lives. This may be different for those people who do know what their aiming for in life and actually need a degree to further succeed in their career.

The art of quoting

As an American libertarian political scientist Charles Murray believes that too many people are going to college that don't necessarily need it. He does describe that school is a good idea overall for people but however he personally believes that some students don't really need it to be successful in life. As he goes about describing why many kids go to college for the wrong reasons "Murray states" that "Guidance counselors and parents who automatically  encourage young people to go to college straight out of high school regardless of their skills and interests are being thoughtless about the best interests of young people in their charge" (paragraph 40). Murray's view is that these kids aren't even given the chance on doing what they want to do. They are forcefully being pushed to go to school just because their elders are telling them to do so.
Murray's thoughts and statements make a lot of sense to me because, I personally have seen this done by many counselors and parents, my girlfriend for an example had gone through this very same situation with her parents. She was forced to go straight into college after she graduated high school without the intentions of really wanting to go. This lead her to loose interests in school only for the fact that she just didn't know what to major in.

Her Point Is 2

In his article "School is a prison-and damaging our kids," Peter Gray emphasizes that school itself is the real problem by forcing and navigating students into paths that they are not even interested in. Also insisting that just by putting more money into schooling systems, creating even more complex teaching programs, and also getting better teachers would not be the main answer to our schooling problems. Gray claims research shows that people from all types of ages learn more effectively when they are motivating themselves. A school that is doing the right things as Gray mentions is Sudbury Valley School, in Framingham, Mass. This school holds students from ages of 4 to 18 years old and it allows its students to do whatever they want in class, but still having them obey some of the school rules. It allows for students to be more enthusiastic of the types of things they want to learn about simply because they are interested in it.
In my view, I disagree despite the fact that Gray brings up good points on how people will only want to learn things if they are interested in the subject. Even though it may be true modern schools still play an important role on teaching students many things they are not interested in. Just because someone isnt iterested in a subject doesnt mean that they will not need it. Many of the things they teach are vital for better preparing students for the many problems they will face in the future.

Thesis statement of higher education

When the topic of higher education is brought up many people question if there really is a need for taking so many classes just to get a simple degree. I personally believe many classes that have to be taken are very useless and are just there just so the school can make a profit.

Blue-Collar Brilliance summary

In his article "Blue-Collar Brilliance," Mike Rose delivers the truths on how manual labor working people do not lack intelligence just for doing their jobs.Providing examples of when his mother was a waitress Mike would described her as a person who was always on her feet and that would be prepared for any situation she would face.

As the topic of the new Toyota Supra comes up in the car enthusiasts world, a large portion of Toyotas fan base agrees that it will have to incorporate some of its old heritage and must be powerfull enough in order to compete with all other modern day supercars. Typically most of the agreeing comes to hault when people start including that the new Toyota supra might not even be called Supra and they may also include a hybrid based engine instead of its old straight 6 2jz twin turbo engine. This may possibly create problems with many of Toyotas die hard sports car fans.
